Washington Chapter of GLSEN

At GLSEN, we want every student, in every school, to be valued and treated with respect, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. We believe that all students deserve a safe and affirming school environment where they can learn and grow.

We accomplish our goals by working in hallways across the country -- from Congress and the Department of Education to schools and district offices in your community -- to improve school climate and champion LGBT issues in K-12 education.

  • We conduct extensive and original research to inform our evidence-based solutions for K-12 education.
  • We author developmentally appropriate resources for educators to use throughout their school community.
  • We partner with decision makers to ensure that comprehensive and inclusive safe schools policies are considered, passed and implemented.
  • We partner with dozens of national education organizations to leverage our shared expertise into creating great schools and better opportunities for every student.
  • We empower students to affect change by supporting student-led efforts to positively impact their own schools and local communities.

Every day GLSEN works to ensure that LGBT students are able to learn and grow in a school environment free from bullying and harassment. Join us as we transform our nation’s K-12 schools.

Law Resources for the LGBT community

Members of society who identify as a part of the LGBT community are those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender.

While the term refers to these particular sexual orientations or gender identities, it acts as an umbrella term for anyone whose sexual orientation or gender identity is considered to be non-traditional. This also includes individuals who are unsure about their sexual orientation or those who are struggling to identify with a specific gender, which also makes them vulnerable to discrimination.

Unfortunately, those who are considered to be a part of these minority groups are frequently subjected to discrimination, harassment, or general bullying by people who disagree with how they live their lives. Discrimination, harassment, or bullying because of sexual orientation or gender, however, is not acceptable, and there are measures that can be taken with the help of the law to take a stand for LGBT rights and equality.

College Guide for Current and Prospective LGBT Students

Identifying LGBT-Friendly Schools

It’s important to thoroughly research any potential colleges you may attend; there is much more to the educational experience than the classes you take. From an LGBT standpoint, consider variables like the research a university’s professors conduct, the presence of campus advocacy groups, or the school’s proximity to other LGBT-friendly communities. The admissions office at any reputable school should be happy to discuss options for LGBT students.

Pew Center Survey of LGBT Americans

A Survey of LGBT Americans

Attitudes, Experiences and Values in Changing Times - click on this link!  GREAT information!

About the Survey

Findings in this report are based on two main data sources:

This report is based primarily on a Pew Research Center survey of the LGBT population conducted April 11-29, 2013, among a nationally representative sample of 1,197 self-identified lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender adults 18 years of age or older. The sample comprised 398 gay men, 277 lesbians, 479 bisexuals and 43 transgender adults. The survey questionnaire was written by the Pew Research Center and administered by the GfK Group using KnowledgePanel, its nationally representative online research panel.

The online survey mode was chosen for this study, in part, because considerable research on sensitive issues (such as drug use, sexual behavior and even attendance at religious services) indicates that the online mode of survey administration is likely to elicit more honest answers from respondents on a range of topics.

The margin of sampling error for the full LGBT sample is plus or minus 4.1 percentage points at the 95% confidence level. For more details on the LGBT survey methodology, see Appendix 1.

In most cases the comparisons made between LGBT adults and the general public are taken from other Pew Research Center surveys.
